Before the grandeur of Lifeforce, there was this exuberant trip of an album. Bass-heavy, catchy and unpredictable, this draws as much from Cosmogramma as it does from 'nu-jazz'. Tom Colquhoun
Sax + Tuba + Drum set + ANOTHER Drum set? What's not to love, here?
I inhaled the Sons Of Kemet discography after hearing Shabaka Hutchings sit in with the Art Ensemble of Chicago, where he blew the house away with this one solo. This band is a great vehicle for his playing: tuba and double-drums provide ample energy but don't occupy the same sonic space, letting him shine. "Play Mass" feels like an obvious choice, but when it hits that refrain it re-wires my brain a bit. Jascha Narveson
